Part III

Chapter Eleven

My mind felt clearer than it had been for ages. There was liquid dried on my cheek and chin, and the skin felt crusty and tight as though I had been drooling in my sleep. My body ached with exhaustion, but my eyes opened willingly. The room was blurry for a moment before I recognized it as the basement. The cold, musty, and damp air chilled me. I was lying on my cot, a blanket pulled up to my chin. I hesitated for a moment before flinging the blanket aside. My bindings were gone, my shirt hastily buttoned, and my body naked from the waist down. I wondered how long I had been down here. I sat at the edge of the bed while my head spun, and though I was alone, I frantically tugged my shirt as low as I could over my bare hips. I closed my eyes, the dim light making spiraling cartwheels behind my eyes. When the room calmed itself, I reopened my eyes and quickly looked around. The basement looked as I remembered it, though it felt as though it had been years since I had seen it.

My brain swam with dizziness as I stood, but I shook it off. I found my pants tossed carelessly under the cot, and with shaking hands yanked them on and rushed for the stairs. My legs ached as they never had before, and twinges of pain stabbed through my hips. I fought to remember what had happened, but I couldn’t see through the black fog that seemed to have clouded my memory. How long had I been asleep? Would Daniel still be waiting for me in the yard? I stealthily climbed the stairs avoiding the ones that moaned. As I pushed the basement door open, I could see the windows were black with night and the house was quiet above me. Could it possibly be the same night? As I started to slip past the kitchen, a figure stepped out in front of me.

Tomás was as surprised as I was. He stared at me for a moment as though I was an apparition that would dissolve in a moment. “What are you doing out of bed?” he scolded in a mock accusatory tone. “You’re not leaving already, are you?”

“Yes, Tomás,” I said and started to step past him, but he blocked my way. “Please let me leave. Why are you doing this? I just want to leave.”

“Want to run off and find your little boyfriend, do you?” he asked, his lips curled into a snide smile. “You won’t find him. I made sure of that.”

A heavy weight fell into my stomach as I instantly thought of the gun Tomás had tucked in the top of his jeans. “What have you done to him?” I demanded.

“The only thing I could do to someone who is trespassing on my property and trying to steal from me. He’s been arrested,” Tomás said with pride. “Lucky for me, the sheriff saw two boys heading toward my house late that night.
